Abstract:

Introduction: The present study aimed to evaluate the Effect of topical tetracycline gel application with non surgical periodontal therapy on HbA1c and lipid profile in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: A total of 30 type 2 diabetic patients were randomly divided into two groups. The first group received scaling and root planning, whereas the second group received scaling and root planning with topically applied tetracycline gel. Clinical factors such as GI, PI, PPD and biochemical factors such as HbA1c and lipid profile were assessed in beginning of study and 3 months later. Results: Comparing the clinical factors between the two groups revealed that periodontal pocket depth significantly reduced in tetracycline-received group. Regarding the biochemical factors, triglyceride levels decreased significantly in tetracycline-received group. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in regard with other clinical and biochemical factors. Conclusion: The study findings demonstrated that clinical and biochemical parameters have been improved after non surgical periodontal treatment in both groups. Although it seems that application of topical tetracycline gel combined with non-surgical periodontal therapy is effective in improvement of some clinical and biochemical factors like PPD and TG, it doesn’t offer any superiority in regard with other factors compared to mere non surgical periodontal therapy.

Abstract:

Background: Psoriasis is a common chronic papulosquamous skin disease. Cardiovascular diseases have been reported with greater frequency in affected individuals. This is mainly due to higher plasma lipid level. This study was conducted with the aim of determining lipid profile in psoriatic patients referring to Booali and Loghman hospitals in 2001. Materials and methods: It was a case-control study. Our exclusion criteria were familial hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, chronic renal failure, connective tissue disease, and users of the following drugs: antilipidemic agents, oral steroids, cyclosporine, and B-blockers. The control group was matched according to the sex, age, body mass index, blood pressure, daily physical activity, and smoking. Blood samples were obtained following 14-hour fasting status, and serum level of triglyceride, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and VLDL were all determined. Statistical analysis was done by Hest. Results: 67 individuals were studied in each group. The study population included 38 males and 29 females with the mean (±SD) age of 37±17 years. For the case group, mean serum level of TG, cholesterol, LDL HDL, and VLDL were 177±188, 201±44, 126±33, 43±11, and 3l±21 mg/dl, respectively. These figures were 99±29, 183±42, 103±41, 6l±11, and 20±6 mg/dl for the control group, respectively. Significant differences were noted between the groups. Conclusion: Results have revealed higher plasma level of TG, cholesterol, LDL, and VLDL and lower level of HDL in psoriatic patients. This could be a contributing factor in cardiovascular diseases. Thus, psoriatic patients should be informed of cardiovascular risk factors and their serum lipid level should be monitored periodically.

Abstract:

Background: Changes in the lipid profile have been suggested as a risk factor for developing ischemic stroke.Their role in intra-cerebral hemorrhage, however, is not clear. The present study was designed to evaluate the lipid profile levels of patients who had experienced an acute stroke during the first 24-hour and to compare these levels in different patients suffering from the stroke, either hemorrhagic or ischemic, and healthy individuals.

Abstract:

Background: lipids play an important role in the functional activity of sperm cells. Objectives: The main goal of this study was to assess the correlation between the levels of cholesterol, phospholipids and triacylglycerols found in serum, with the lipid levels of semen in infertile men.Patients and Methods: Cholesterol, phospholipids and triacylglycerols in sperm cells, seminal plasma and serum were assayed in 60 infertile men. Results: There were no significant relationships between the concentration of sperm and seminal plasma cholesterol with serum cholesterol (r=0.003, P=0.9 and r=0.055, P=0.67, respectively), between the concentration of sperm and seminal plasma triglycerides with serum triglycerides (r=0.16, P=0.2 and r=- 0.039, P=0.77, respectively), or between the concentration of sperm and seminal plasma phospholipids with serum phospholipids (r=0.18, P=0.16 and r=0.053, P=0.69, respectively). Conclusions: These results suggest that serum cholesterol, phospholipids and triacylglycerols have no effect on the levels of cholesterol, phospholipids and triacylglycerols of spermatozoa and seminal plasma. Our findings suggest that sperm lipid content is regulated locally within the male reproductive tract.

Abstract:

Background: Many risk factors have been reported to be higher among hypertensive than normotensive subjects. This study was an effort to determine the prevalence and types of dyslipidemia among the hypertensive population. Methods: This case-control study was performed on 1500 participants over 30 years of age between 1998 and 2001. The case group consisted of uncomplicated non-diabetic hypertensive patients, and the control group was composed of normotensive individuals. First a questionnaire containing demographic details, drug intake and smoking status was completed. Then physical examination, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) and body mass index (BMI), was performed. Fasting blood sample was drawn for sugar (FBS), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and low and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C and HDL-C). Data were analysed in SPSS V11/Win by using t-test and Chi-square test. Results: Mean age in the case and control groups was 51.03±18.7 and 50.84±19.3, respectively. TC and LDL-C levels were higher in the hypertensive population, and this just reached statistical significance. There were no significant differences in HDL-C and TG levels. LDL-C was also significantly higher in the female hypertensives as compared to the males and also in comparison with the controls. TG and HDL-C levels were not significantly different in either sex in the two groups. The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was more than 75 percent in the case and nearly 70 percent in the control group. Hypercholesterolemia and high LDL-C were more prevalent in the case compared to the control group. Conclusion: These results indicate that hypercholesterolemia and high LDL-C are the more common variety of dyslipidemia in uncomplicated hypertension and that we must consider primary and secondary prevention with life style modification and drug therapy in hypertensive patients.

Abstract:

It has been established that a reduction in the serum lipids decreases the clinical effects and morbidity and mortality in patients suffering from coronary heart disease. Thus it was decided to conduct a study evaluating the effect of cardiac rehabilitation on lipid profile in cardiac patients. In this clinical trial which was carried out on 120 patients who had reported to the cardiac rehabilitation unit and were suffering from myocardial infarction, or else had undergone a coronary artery bypass surgery or an angioplasty. At first the 14 hour fasting blood samples of two groups were sent for serum total cholesterol (T.Cho), triglycerides (TG), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and in the same manner 12 weeks later, the same samples were taken and measured. The following data was obtained using students test.Sixty patients participated in cardiac rehabilitation program including 24 exercise sessions (45-60 minute/session), dietary consultation and mental health and 60 patients (control group) being the same as the intervention group in age, socioeconomic status, serum lipids profile, history of coronary heart disease and other risk factors who didnt participate in cardiac rehabilitation program because of being far from this center or other reasons.T.Cho, TG and LDL-C of intervention group had decreased in 70%,62% and 76% of patients and in 86% patients, HDL-C showed an increase. T.Cho, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C was normalized in 35%, 30%, 68% and 66%, respectively after finishing their 2 month course which overall showed a 20, 56, and 30 mg/dl reduction in serum lipids respectively and 0.8 reduction in LDL-C/HDL-C (P<0.05) and 5 mg/dl increase serum HDL-C( P<0.05 ) in intervention group vs. control group. The decrease in T.Cho, TG and LDL-C and increase in HDL-C in all patients and normalization of lipid profile in most of them shows the importance of rehabilitation in cardiac patients and the need for its continuity.

Abstract:

Hyperlipidemia plays a strong role in coronary artery disease and is the second major risk factors in our population in Isfahan. This study ' investigated the effect of cardiac rehabilitation on serum lipids. Methods: Our group in the cardiac rehabilitation center chose a group of 120 patients who were referred after cardiac surgery or post- MI and followed them for 2 months. 60 patients participated in cardiac rehabilitation program containing 24 exercise sessions (45-60 minute/ session), dietary consultation and mental health and 60 patients (control group) being the same as the intervention group in age, socio-economic status, serum lipids profile, history of coronary heart disease and other risk factors who didn’t participate in cardiac rehabilitation program because of begin far from this center or other reasons. At first the 14hour fasting blood samples of two groups were sent for serum total cholesterol (T.Cho), triglycerides (TG), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and in the same manner12 weeks later, the same samples were taken and measured the following data was obtained using students test. Results: T Cho, TG and LDL-C of intervention group has decreased in 70%,62% and 76% of patients and in 86% patients, HDL-C showed an increase. T.coh, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C was normalized in 35%, 30%, 68% and 66%, respectively after finishing their 2 month course which overall showed a 20, 56, and 30 mg/dl reduction in serum lipids respectively and 0.8 reduction in LDL-C / HDL_C (P<0.05) and 5 mg / dl increase serum HDL-C (P<0.05) in intervention group vs. control group. Discussion: The decrease in T.cho, TG and LDL-C and increase in HDL-C in all patients and normalization of lipid profile in most of them shows the importance of rehabilitation in cardiac patients and the need for its continuity.

Abstract:

Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between serum lipids including cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglyceride and erectile dysfunction (ED).Materials and Methods: From January 2000 to June 2003, 100 patients with organic ED, who were referred to our center, were selected and their lipid profile (Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL, LDL) were assessed. The results were compared with those in 100 healthy individuals. Results: Mean age of men in the study and control groups were 43.72 ± 9.76 and 43.59 ± 10.51 years, respectively. Mean plasma cholesterol and LDL levels in individuals suffering from erectile dysfunction were significantly higher than controls (P = 0.04 and P = 0.02, respectively). However, no difference in the mean plasma triglyceride and HDL levels was seen. Odds Ratios for high plasma cholesterol level (>240 mg/dl) and high plasma LDL level (>160 mg/dl) were 1.74 and 1.97, respectively (r2 = 0.04 and r2 = 0.04). Using linear regression analysis, the regression coefficient for cholesterol and LDL versus the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction Questionnaire (IIEF) score were -0.036 and -0.035, respectively (95% confidence interval: 0.98 - 2.5 for cholesterol and 1.13 - 2.81 for LDL). Conclusion: The impact of total cholesterol and particularly LDL on mens erectile function underlines the role of hyperlipidemia treatment in prevention of ED and emerges a holistic management in ED patients.
